Centennial Firm Dominant in Soccer, Altitude and Beer

Rapid Man holds Rocky Mountain CupWhat sport doesn’t benefit from rivalries? From Duke – North Carolina to Army – Navy to Rangers - Celtic every sport has major rivalry games. In MLS there is one major rivalry, Chicago – Dallas (Alas, the LA – San Jose rivalry has lost something with the Earthquakes move to Houston). The Rocky Mountain Cup is the representation of the new MLS rivalry between the Colorado Rapids and Fake Salt Lake. When MLS announced that Salt Lake City would be getting an expansion team, there was instant animosity between the long-time Rapids supporters and the late to the party Salt Lake fans. This is just the next step in a long standing beef between Denver and Salt Lake City over skiing, altitude, and outdoor activities. It seemed natural for the fans to capitalize on this rivalry, and the Rocky Mountain Cup was created by the Committee of 10, a group of fans of both clubs.

In its first year of existence, the Rocky Mountain Cup was won by the rightful holders, the Colorado Rapids. After a slight stumble in the opening match between the teams where Fake Salt Lake was able to Rocky Mountain Cuptake advantage of playing in front of their fans for the first time, the Rapids took control of the series, winning the 3 other games over the course of the season. The first year was topped off by a road trip by 10 die-hard Rapids fans to Salt Lake City on a cool Wednesday night to see Fabrice Noel score his professional goal. The Cup was awarded to the Rapids at midfield of FSL’s stadium and the Rapids fans joined the team on the field to celebrate in front of the disappointed Loyalists
